Veoh high on blocking
Veoh is no longer available in MALAYSIA.

Was what greeted me this morning when I got online to find some videos to download. Can you say “omgwtfwhyisveohblockingmalaysian?!” in 2 seconds? I believe I did just that in the span of 2 seconds for a whole 5 minutes.
I don’t usually frequent Veoh due to the load time. I much prefer crunchyroll for my daily dose of anime and drama. But hey, Veoh happens to have Gokusen 3 where crunchyroll does not.
Curious to find out the reason behind the blockage of Malaysian viewers into Veoh, I scouted out their forums to find that it wasn’t only Malaysia! In fact, they have blocked just about all the minor countries there is!

And countless others that haven’t noticed that their countries were blocked as of yet. Not to mention the number of countries being listed here is GROWING by the minute!
The question here is…Why?!
The answer as per what the administrator of the forum says (repeatedly answering the same over and over again as I might add) and the conclusion that COULD be made :
“Hello Everyone,
Unfortunately Veoh has ended service in your countries due to a low concentration of users. Veoh is maintaining service in countries when we have the highest concentration of viewers.
We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for using Veoh.”
We can conclude that yes, minor countries MAY not bring in as much revenue when it comes to their advertisers and what not. And yes, minor countries may not have the highest concentration of users. BUT, as I’ve already mentioned, MINOR countries. Compared to MAJOR countries, of course we minor countries will have less viewers compared to them.
“Folks - bear with us on this front. It certainly seems like a harsh decision, especially when you’re on the wrong end of the rule, however this is something that is necessary for us to do to keep providing the service that we have. I am sure this, like the 5-minute preview limit, is something that will likely undergo some tuning as we go forward.”
Was it really? Was it really THAT necessary for them to block minor countries to provide their current services? Wasn’t Veoh doing fine even before this blockage? I don’t see other video sites such as YouTube, Google Videos, Crunchyroll, FlickPeek, Imeem, or other sites for that matter, doing what Veoh has currently done.
Think of how many viewers they have now lost due to this blockage. As minorities, it wouldn’t look like much, but if you add these minority countries together, the number of viewers can come close to equal to at least one or 2 major countries. An ant does not build a nest on its own.
Furthermore, I’d like to mention that, in these modern times, there are a considerable amount of bloggers out there whom are going into the whole video blogging frenzy where they like to make videos of things that interest, fascinate, intrigued them to make a video out of it. Where do they upload these videos? Video upload sites of course. What happens next? They get a link of their videos and post it up in their blogs.
Their initial goal? To keep a memory of their video. Their secondary goal? To share it with the world. But how can this be done for these Veoh video bloggers if their videos can ONLY be viewed by major countries? More or less upload the video if they so happened to be in the minor regions. And not to mention, the videos that were ALREADY uploaded!!
I’d understand if it was bandwidth problems and such but excuses such as “low concentration of users” is just plain discrimination in my point of view. And here I thought most the world have went past those barriers. Especially if you’re a matured individual/organization/country. We are, after all, residing on the same planet and would die the same way as everyone else when the world comes to an end thanks to our contributions to the growing amount of pollution, global warming, and everything that plain kills.
So dear Veoh, why discriminate us minorities and hurt yourself? Think about it! If you combine miorities together, you’d come up with one third or half the worlds population! (This is a rough estimate from me which I’m unsure of.) So do us all a favor, unblock us
EDIT : I smell a crisis from this corner of the world where Veoh is concerned. Veoh users are on the move with their protest! *Arms self with rotten tomatoes*
EDIT EDIT : For your protesting delights, please look for more information at Veoh forums.
EDIT EDIT EDIT : Added more regions to the list of blocked countries. My my, how the list have finally grown up…
EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT : * updated blocked countries as of 1st June 2008, FYI, that’s 17 updated countries.
EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT : Finally finalized the list. Look at that…a whopping 166 countries blocked.

I’m from El Salvador, this move from Veoh can only be called RACIST, you don’t see YouTube doing this coward move to other people, this is nothing more than racism and some idiotic move on veoh’s behalf, this is just the beginning of a HUGE problem for Veoh, they’re not just messing with ONE country, they’re banning everything that doesn’t read “United States of America” from their site! And that spells trouble, they should correct their mistake quickly… trust me, they’re messing with fire and they’re gonna get burned. This is not a threat from my part, it’s a fact, Veoh is messing with millions of people around the globe…
As for Veoh’s staff, well, there’s an old saying that says that you don’t have to study to be an idiot!
Oh and BTW bad move from Veoh, we’re helping the U.S.A. on the war in Iraq, this ban is a bit**-slap to all of us Salvadorians. Fu** you Veoh!

*applauses* i wouldn’t have said it better myself. Uuum do
think the protests will work?? its true i thought that veoh was like always behind youtube. Malaysia has totally lost a valuable source. You’re right they WILL be losing MORE money and eventually end up destroying themselves. UNBLOCK M”SIA!!!!!!
May 31st, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Funny that Singapore’s not listed in here. Not really insinuating anything, but I guess Singaporeans don’t use Veoh that much anyway? (Especially after their whole Odex escapade.)

Sadly the list keeps growing…. )<
Veoh is making a HUGE mistake.

Thank you everyone for the comments.
@ Andres Ventura :
Indeed, it’s a bad move on Veoh’s part to block countries due to minority and indeed, eventually they are gonna get burned by this decision. At this point, I’m just waiting to see what their explanation would be on this whole issue.
And thank you kindly for keeping me updated on the list
@ blabla :
I’m not really sure protesting will do much in this case. Throughout the whole day, much protest have been going on within the Veoh forums but sad to say, the admins are doing absolutely nothing to reply to their users. This does not bode well for Veoh in the sense of trustworthiness.
However do not despair, I heard that vreel[dot]net would be up soon. Hopefully bigger and better than Veoh. Hopefully.
@ Naddie :
If say Singapore have not been blocked, it is safe to say that Veoh evaluate each countries usage by percentage. What I mean is that, they have probably set up a certain scoring.
For example, although Singapore is small, but more than a certain percentage uses it but in Malaysia, there so happens to be less than a certain percentage actually using it.
This is just speculation on my part.
@ camper :
Thanks for the update on your part of the world
June 1st, 2008 at 4:05 am
add Romania to the blocked list too
… This is just mean…I sure hope there was some way we could make the veoh staff feel our wrath )<
June 1st, 2008 at 4:41 am
I’m from Denmark and it isn’t working here:(
June 1st, 2008 at 7:45 am
Jess: Well I guess that would make sense… But come on, their population is a fraction of ours, and we can’t make up the percentage to become a non-minority? It doesn’t really add up to me, lol.
Ah well, it doesn’t matter, I’m tired of all the drama. It’s like that time when Veoh decided to let us download their videos as flvs - look how that one turned out. Here’s hoping it’ll blow over in a couple of weeks. If not, there are always hacks to try and whatnot
June 1st, 2008 at 8:31 am
Im 4m jamaica and of course based on the list,im am also experiencing the same bullshit.personally im so upset i ready to wash my hands of veoh, even if they come back,it wud be months b4 i go back,if at all.tired of racism,in airport, job interviews,in hotels, every damn where.i have nothing against those who fit the descriptions that im about the state, but if ur not white and a citizen of a first world country,or well recognized 2nd world country.apparently we dont exist to the world,r we r just a nuisance they hav to accommodate.well like Naddie mentioned above, about hacks.i hav thought of a few and i read of one somewhere which shud be easy.but has not been tried by me r the other person.simply changing ur IP r proxy shud do the trick, logically speaking.and im told if
use mozilla firefox, which most ppl shud be using :D.there a function where it allows
to change ur IP/proxy when surfing websites and it gives
a loist of them 2 choose 4m,especially 1s 4m america,so yeah.thats wat i know so far.

I have now updated the list. It contains 16 more countries that were blocked from their actions. Thanks for the update.
@ Romaniajin :
They are not much feeling our wrath at the moment than avoiding the whole issue. In fact, they have only replied to the issue of being block for the first few forum thread makes. After that, I’m sure they have just averted their eyes when it comes to the sentence “Why is my country blocked?!”
I’m sure most of you have noticed that they have only replied to other threads that was not tied to their decision of blocking “low concentrated users” countries.
@ Dumdum :
I feel for you, man.
@ Naddie :
It would make sense in a way, but this is the internet and we’re not at war. There is absolutely no reason for them to build a barrier as if we are illegal immigrants about to bomb their whole system.
As for me, I’ll be updating the list as days go by and be on stand by to see what will happen in the coming weeks.
@ xxxblacknightxxx :
It’s not so much racism as it is internet discrimination and nationalism (if there were such a thing). If it was about race, I’d think even the US would be blocked as how it’s also multi-racial. But the fact is, they are blocking off minor countries.
Indeed, “one for all and all for one”.
@ Ahurr :
Thanks for the list and just to mention this bit as I did in the forums, there are duplicates in that list, for example, Chile. But thanks anyway

June 1st, 2008 at 9:34 pm
@ gozberry7 :
Thank you for the update, it will be added shortly.
@ dknight :
Speculations are the only answers we have right now it seems, but yes, a slap or two would indeed help us feel way better
